How to Be a Better Business Networker Online

Social networking online. People do it all the time. FaceBook, MySpace…. and although the term is “social” networking ie indicating a friendship or leisure pastime, more and more people are turning to these sites as a means of promoting themselves in a business sense, or indeed to search for a new business idea. So shouldn’t it be called business networking, instead of social networking?
Every business needs customers. It is unlikely that they would turn to a social networking site for exclusive access to customers however, although it is probable that with the vast number of people who are registered (particularly with the bigger sites) then someone, somewhere, may want or need what the business professional is offering – and provided they are discreet about introducing their business opportunity over the internet via such sites, then the situation may be acceptable to all.
True business networking however, requires a dedicated business networking site. Its advantage is, that whilst arguably a smaller site, (say several thousand, instead of a couple of million registered users) nonetheless it will be a “targeted” site and so you are more likely to find the customer/ business that you are seeking/ offering,rather than with the scatter gun approach you must take when registering with a “social” network whose primary aim or interest is NOT to promote your business, services or goods, after all.
Even amongst business networking sites, there will be competition and definite Pros and Cons for certain sites, which only you will be able to judge. First do your research. Look on the internet for the various sites you can join. Most (if not all) are FREE and therefore the more you register with the better perhaps? Not necessarily. Again this would be taking a bit of a scatter-gun approach in the hope that by registering with lots of business networks, there is bound to be one that suits you best.
Why not be more selective in your approach? Research the many sites by all means (and this will take time and some effort on your part) but select one which meets the criteria you have pre-selected. For example, are you looking for online messaging (where you can send messages to other users in real time)? If so, does one particular site offer this, and no other? If several offer this facility, maybe you should look at the whereabouts of its many usual members. If, for example, they hail mainly from USA, that’s great – but only if you can do business there. If your business is strictly for mainland UK, for instance, you need to find customers and promote your business to a UK-wide audience. And in this case the internet may or may not be the best idea. Yes – if you can go global – but NO if you need to be able to travel easily to meet your eventual customers or business partners, affiliates, etc. Other media may be better (eg. your local newspaper or a leaflet drop perhaps).
If you are looking to place business internationally, and maybe you work from home, or run an internet-based business but you are looking for new distributors into, say, a MLM business as an independent distributor for an exciting new health product, then you would specifically look at joining a networking site where you may find like-minded people for this particular project. See what I mean about FaceBook (despite its obvious popularity) not being the best site for this particular activity then?
There is a networking site which has launched specifically for the MLM (Multi Level Marketer) or persons looking to make greater profit from working from home.
