In a world that’s overrun with advertising on virtually every surface and screen, consumers have become adept at tuning out marketing messages. For businesses, this creates a unique challenge to break through the clutter and get their message across. Many businesses, both large and small are discovering the value of business card magnets as a way to reach their target audience.
It’s simply a fact of life today that consumers are the targets of more advertising than ever before, in newspapers, direct mail, on TV, radio and the Internet. The vast majority gets ignored, often tossed directly into the virtual or real wastebasket. Consumers, ever more skeptical about marketing pitches, reject pushy, high-pressure advertising approaches. Believe it or not, business card magnets still have an appeal that enables them to break through the “noise” and be effective marketing tools.
Business card magnets have a unique appeal to consumers, because they offer a perceived value that paper business cards do not. The popularity of business card magnets can be traced directly to their added usefulness to the recipient.
Business cards themselves are an old idea, one that far predates the development of business card magnets. By the 1830s, the British were commonly using “trade cards,” which were printed using a multi-color lithographic process. From these beginnings, American business cards developed. Business card magnets took the basic concept of business cards and refined it further.
The 1950s saw paper business cards become common throughout the U.S. business community. In the early 1970s, a fad developed that became the forerunner of business card magnets – refrigerator magnets. Not long afterward, someone had the brilliant idea of combining the business card and the refrigerator magnet, and business card magnets were created.
The problem with paper business cards is that they’re easy to lose or dispose of. People find it easy to toss them into the nearest trash bin. But business card magnets have several advantages over their paper counterparts. Business card magnets offer solidity and heft in the recipient’s hand that paper can’t match. It feels like something worth keeping.
In addition, business card magnets are useful for a purpose other than just contact information. The recipient can use them at home or office to hold documents in place. As the magnet does so, it also keeps the business contact information right in front of the customer, right where they can access it quickly when they’re ready to buy.
The simple fact is, business card magnets are useful to the consumer. People depend on them to keep school papers, prescription slips, school calendars and other documents they depend on close at hand. And when they’re ready for the product or service the business that provided the business card magnets is selling, who are they most likely to call? The business they have to look up online or in the telephone book, or the one whose contact information is right there in front of them on the business card magnets?
Business card magnets can be ordered in custom shapes and colors, even in glow-in-the-dark styles. For just about any business today, business card magnets are a smart marketing tool.
